  1. The whole tray needs to be cleaned, and I'm afraid every other day is not enough! Even if you take out the mess all the time, there will still be some left over in the litter and on the actual tray.

Scoop it everytime you've seen that he's used it, and wash and refill it every 2 days or so, and it will definitely stop smelling. Remember he uses it all the time! :)

  2. Yes a horrible problem

I would say first change the kitten to a dry food if not doing so already its the only way to go with house cats. Otherwise you will have terrible odour problems I feed mine on royal canin. I have found any time I have run out and switched their food I will smell it later on in the tray!! I also give them some fresh ham, chicken , fish etc absolutely no tins.

Next thing is the type of litter you are using. I use Cats best by oko plus which I buy on line from zooplus.ie if in uk zooplus.uk.  It is absolutely brilliant cat litter I have kept cats for over 30 years and this is definitely the best on the market and lasts for ages its biodegradable too.  So if you scoop as the cat goes you can flush it down the toilet quite easily. If your out all day it would be enough to scoop every morning or evening whichever suits, its very easy to see the used litter. I promise your place will smell a lot better I have four cats and never get a bad smell unless as I said I've run out of their normal food in the past. I would never use any other cat litter it really is that good. Give it a try you wont regret it.

  3. try fresh step.

  4. I have two cats and no matter what litter I used and how much baking soda I used, litter boxes still smelled.  Finally a friend recommended a product called Fridge-IT. Wow, this product really works and totally got rid of odor.  Now, I use it on litter box all the time.

Go get a few of those Fridge It activated carbon odor absorbers. - little purple cube - don't waste money on the imitations. Just hang on the litter box and forget about it.Totally unscented so it actually eliminates odor rather than covering up with some nasty fragrance and totally safe to use.

I've also used these for spilled something in my purse, closets, cabinets, worst smells in fridge and ice in freezer. Also, took care of spoiled fish in car which was really bad. No spills or chemicals to worry about. You can buy these in kitchen gadget stores or just go direct which is what I do - contact them at customerservice@innofresh.com and ask for order form. You get it right away.

Definitely the way to go. try it.

    Good luck

  5. there is powder you can sprinkle on top of the clean litter to help. try natures miracle or even arm and hammer for littler boxes, you will find it anywhere in the litter section, make sure that when kitty is old enough you get it fixed, if it is a boy, it will really stink because of hormones. tom cat pee smell is the worst! Good Luck!

  6. every other day is totally inadequate.  put the litter box in the bathroom and every time you go, take - literally - less than two seconds to scoop what's in the litter and flush it.

change the litter every week.  when you do, put a good thick layer of baking soda down first.  it really helps.

  7. you could move it to r room that is less used in the house.  or you could just change cat litter to a different brand.  some are worse then others.  try those scented things that plug into the wall

  8. It's best to scoop at least twice every day.  It also may be time to have your cat neutered.  The urine odor from an unneutered cat is strong......much stronger if it is a male.

Litter should be changed weekly and the box cleaned with hot water and a mild detergent.  Areas around the box should be swept at least daily and washed at least weekly.

Dirty litter box quite often equals a dirty cat...........not a good thing!

    Good Luck!

  9. If it is the stool, it could be the type of food you are feeding.  Is the stool runny?  Has the kitten been checked for worms yet?

Also I agree with the other answers as well.  Need to clean it much more often.  And consider a different type of litter perhaps.

  10. Get a different brand of litter-but make sure that it doesn't have any fragrance that you can detect or the kitten will stop using the box altogether.

Most of the cheaper ones don't do anything for the odor.  Go with one of the slightly more expensive and hard clumping/scoopable brands as they work better and don't need to be fully replaced nearly as often.  There's a reason the cheap litter is cheap.  Tidy Cats is a good brand that I've had good luck with and I haven't known of anyone who has had problems with it.  Don't go with an all crystal litter until the kitten is at least 6 months old as they might ingest it from l*****g their paws.  I used to use the regular Special Kitty (from Walmart) but apparently they changed the formula recently to get people to buy their newer and more expensive formula because now it's not nearly so effective.

  11. Try a different type of litter. They make some for multiple cat households and they are better for odor control. I personally like fresh step the best.

  12. Try a stronger litter like fresh step for multi cats and add a little fresh to maintain a 3 inch level in the box. Maybe a hooded litter box with filters and clean out the litter at least once a month and your litter box wipes to get rid of the odor. Also scoop at least once a day preferably twice. hope that helps

  13. Hi there,

I scoop my boxes several times a day to avoid odor, but most of all to provide the most sanitary condition for my cats. Just like humans avoid using unclean toilets, cats will begin to avoid using their litter boxes if not kept clean.

In addition to boxes that are not kept pristine, there are other reasons for littler boxes to stink. Cats with parasites may have very stinky poops, for one, and certain cat foods can produce very odiforous stools. Fishy foods are the worst, in my opinion.

You may want to have your kitten's stools examined for parasites, and increase your scooping. Also, if you are not providing the highest quality cat food, you may consider changing to a brand that has higher nutrition and less volumn of p**p. Natural Balance is an excellent cat food, and one that is readily available from good pet stores.

    Hope this helps,

  14. put some baking soda in with the litter or buy the litter that has baking soda in it. there is fresh step litter or arm and hammer litter. i prefer the scoopable litter and remove the clumps each day

  15. Get a better brand of cat food.  I cat sat for someone over a summer once and found that spending a bit more for the expensive cat food meant much fewer litter box changes.  Most grocery store cat food is about 50% digestable while the good stuff is 80% digestable.  So by using a better brand, your cats will p**p half as much. They also eat less of the good stuff since they get more out of it so you don't end up spending more.

Also check out different brands of cat litter. If you put some peat moss or baking soda into the box, it will absorb the ammonia odor quite a bit.  Avoid clay based cat litter. We use pine-based litter which can be composted.

  16. I agree with Jen's answer.  I also use a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers.   Activated carbon filter is fantastic for getting rid of tough litter box smell.   It's convenient, not expensive and totally fragrance free which I like.

  17. keep on pooper scooping and also change the little about once a week. also maybe put your cat little in a seperate room(maybe the laundry room) and keep the door closed. to let your cat in, maybe put one of those cat door things on there.

    hope i helped!!

  18. CHANGE THE LITTER EVERY WEEK:)

    I hope I helped....

  19. We keep ours by the back door, and put deodourising powder in it every day.  We also p**p scoop once a day.  After 4-5 days, we change the litter completely because the urine starts to smell and the litter coagulates at the bottom. We also have newspaper in the bottom of the tray, which i think helps.
