a bit old but Far Cry is one of the best FPS but avoid Crysis because your laptop may well explode if you try to play it!

America's Army is a good game it's created by the us government and is free.

Also try Combat Arms free.

Both Are Good Games.

With 1.7 GHZ it's safe to say you will be able to play nearly every FPS Game.

Some good games to start off with are ones like Call of Duty, Counter Strike, then if you have Vista, I would advise getting ShadowRun or Gears of War.

Most FPS games need an installation disc, but then are free to play after that.

If you have no/little FPS experience at all, a good game to start on is Counter Strike though.

Hey seriously man, your gonna need a better processor.

And Its just NOT the processor, is is severly baised on how much RAM you have and your video card/chip

And to l2theuka, Im sorry but i have to disagree. Most common FPS are generally 1.90 GHz - 3.50 GHz due to the fact that more games are starting to use more environmental lighting and physicis. You cane use assume that he will safely be able to play msot games if he doesnt have enough RAM
