  1. It sounds like a short in the wiring before the switch. when you have the switch on the light and or fan act as a resistor and take up the heat energy that the short is causing.

when you turn off the light or fan then the heat is at the short this is blowing your breaker of fuse.

You need to get this fixed and soon as possible. You could loose you home because of it.

May be insulation break down in the wire before it gets to the switch.

  2. bad switch?

  3. Three possibilities.

1.You have a short in the wiring.

    2. Or some dust or cob webs are across the terminals in the roof.

    3.Or maybe the switch (unlikely).

Get an electrician in. (i should know cos i am one:)

  4. It is best to wire them seperately using a two switch socket and plate. Then if it is a bad switch, (Not likely, but possible), you can solve your problem! It may just be a loose connection too.

I have found it is more of a convenience to have it wired seperately...which is why I suggested that.

    Hope this helps!
