  1. As has already been stated, if there is enough of the chain sticking out, you can buy a new chain to hook onto it, or even a string.

If there is no chain out where you can get to it, you could replace the pull switch itself.  A typical pull switch runs about $3.

This link, at Lowe's, has pull switches, and pendant chains -

You can find pull switches at most stores, like WalMart, Target, etc, and any hardware, or building supply store.  All you need is a simple on/off switch.  (some ceiling fan pull switches will have Hi - Lo, and off)

To replace the pull switch on the light fixture-

Find and turn off the circuit breaker to that fixture

Remove the globe, loosen the two screws holding the base of the fixture to the ceiling.

Disconnect the wires (usually a couple of wire nuts) to the switch.

Unscrew the knurled k**b, which holds the switch in the light fixture.

Now you're ready to put the new one in.... thread the chain thru the hole in the light fixture, and run the knurled k**b up it, and tighten it on the pull switch to attach it to the fixture.

Hook the wires back up, with the wire nuts.

Re-attach the fixture to the ceiling, and put the light globe back on.

Turn the circuit breaker back on, and your'e finished  :)

Should take about ten minutes, and the only tool you need is a screwdriver.

By the way, a typical globe light like this with a pull chain costs about $6 to $10, if you need to replace the whole thing.  Of course, you could spend quite a bit more, hehehe.

  2. that depends on what actually happened.  if the chain broke with enough hanging out of the socket fixture maybe you can attach another chain to it.  if the chain broke inside the socket fixture, or real close to it, you may have to replace the socket fixture
