  1. The function of a router is to take an existing Internet connection and divide it between two or more computer.  For a router to work, there has to be an Internet signal coming to the router.  That means the router has to be connect by a network cable to a working cable or DSL modem.  Routers do NOT simply get the Internet out of midair somehow magically.

Once the router has been connected to a cable or CSL modem, you can then connect to the router either by using a network cable from the router to your computer, or by connecting to a wireless signal that your router broadcast.  Since you have no wireless card in your computer, you would have to use a network cable from your computer to the router to connnect.

Even if you had a wireless enabled computer, you would still have to use a cable to connect your computer to the router the very first time to configure your router. You can not configure a router "wirelessly".  Once you have used the network cable to configure the router, then you can disconnect the cable from the router to the PC (but not the one from the router to the DSL/cable modem) and run the computer wirelessly.  But the router itself always has to be wired to your Internet modem.

  2. This works for most linksys routers:

    1.  Plug the router into power.  Hit reset and hold for 30 secs to make sure the settings are default (yes, it has happened to me that the router had funky settings when it arrived)

    2.  connect the router to your PC via ethernet cable

    3.  change your pc ip address to be something like:

192.168.1.*  Where * is a number from 2 to 255.  your dns server should be your PC's ip address or the address of the router (read on)

    4.  open internet explorer and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.  This should get you to the config program in the router.  You'll need your broadband information to configure it.

    5.  Save your config when you're done and then upgrade the firmware on the router - you may have to reload the config afterwards.

This is off the top of my head so check www.linksys.com for your product manual if it doesn't work.

  3. you need an ethernet patch cable.....

  4. i have the same brand router but not the same model, any way it should have come with a cd that you would install the software on your labtop and to the computer your setting your router up through. then you should be able to hook it up
