I have a list of books which we are going to read for HL English (IB). Which one do i read in Gr 11?

In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje

The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

Odyssey by Homer

Hamlet by Shakespeare

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsy

That is the list, from this list which one are the ones that would potentially come up in Gr 11? and which one would we be reading in Gr 12?

  1. You'll need to check with your school district, but generally American Literature is taught in 11th grade English.  That would eliminate all of those books.  It's possible that your IB program teachers the 12th grade curriculum to juniors.  In that case, all of those books can be read since they cover British Authors although Allende, Homer, and Solzhenitzen are not British. (British Lit is usually covered in 12th grade English.)

    Call your school and ask the teacher who will be teaching the course.


  2. Well, i dont think anyone could really tell you unless they are a grade ahead of you in your school.
