On one long wall are two entrances, book shelves surrounding the fireplace in the middle. On the opposite long wall is a big window. On one short end is another entrance the opposite end is a wall. Can someone help? I know I should divide the room but with three entrances I don' t know how.

  1. When I'm stumped like this, that's when i hit the decorating magazine rack at my local bookstore.  Just browse through a bunch of them and you'll find some interesting ideas.

Or just browse some of the furniture store websites since they have room layouts.

Maybe you'll see something that really appeals to you and then you can modify it fit your own room.

  2. You don't give the dimensions of the room so it is hard to say what to do.  Usually one floats furniture in a room.  Never line the walls with furniture if you have the space and bought the right furniture sizes.  Keep a traffic pattern but primarily build your furniture around your fireplace wall.  If your room is large enough for other furniture, then the actual size of the room will help determine that but given so little info, I can't determine that.

  3. Don't try to place the sofa against the wall. Think of the focal point (probably the fireplace), and arrange around it. If you have enough room and furniture, you can put a smaller seating area behind or off to the side of the main one.

HGTV's website has an interactive room designer. Give it a try.
