I have a male cat neutered. should i get a female or a male cat? Every gender should have a mate right?

When it comes to cats, this may not be true. Some cats like to be the only cat in the house and will let it be known if they think another one is an intruder. Even neutered males can spray if they are upset or thinks that the other cat is in their territory. If your cat seems happy, you might consider letting him stay number 1.

If you got another male your first one wouldn't be to happy with you. A female would be a better choice, and make sure shes younger because if shes bigger they could also fight.

I have heard that it is best to have a male and a female, around the same age so they'll have a similar activity level. Once or twice, I have read that male cats are okay together, and that female cats together isn't as likely to work out. It is better to get a second cat while your current cat is under four years old, so he will be more accepting of the newcomer.

Whenever I worry about what's best, I think about the people who own or foster up to ten or more cats all together, and they all seem to get along. Best case scenario: you'll end up with two cats who are inseparable, they'll groom each other and sleep in the same bed.... Worst case scenario: they'll fight a little at first, and then after a few days they'll realize there's no getting out of the situation, so they'll just avoid each other all the time. Either way, you'll be taking an additional cat off the street and giving it a great life with lots of love, affection, vet care, and food.

Neutered males get along fine.  And a neutered male will usually get along with a spayed female if she isn't overly dominant.
