I have a modem that only has one ethernet port and a USB port. How could I get Xbox live without a router?

If your xbox is far away from your modem, use home plugs. They run the internet through the electrical cables in your house, i use them. It means you have constant connection and no worries as it is now wireless. Then run your pc off usb slot.

if you have a wireless internet connection it would just be easier to buy a wireless network adapter

put the ethernet cored in to the back of the modem

Run the PC off the USB port and the Xbox off the Ethernet port. There's a very good chance the modem supports that. If not, you can use Internet Connection Sharing to turn your PC into a router, sharing the USB based connection among the devices at the PC's Ethernet port.
