What is the best way to get rid of it? Should I buy a mouse trap and if so what should I put on it?

We have a little ermine, a white weasel, that can get through any hole a mouse gets through, and she will clear the house of mice in a few days, then goes outside to get those that are out there,

The ermine is also effective in controlling the black squirrels that we attract because we grow walnuts.

A ferret would do much the same.

My house is very old, and I have a mouse or 2 myself. I know this sounds daft, but I actually like having them around. I make sure I don't leave food scraps lieing around, and that they don't get into my food cupboards. I always leave a white cloth soaking in bleach overnight to wipe down work surfaces, but other than that, I leave them to it, and even scatter a few crumbs for them at night. If you feel you cannot live with them, please buy a humane trap, and set them free at least a mile away, as they have a habit of finding their way home.

You need a cat. Effective, but actually a trap, even one that kills the mouse, is less cruel. Cats like to "play" with the mouse until it is dead but the trap is usually fast.

Can you borrow a friend's/neighbour's cat?!

Mouse traps are for sure the best way to capture the little critters.  But, please, do get one of the humane varieties!  Mice like seeds, nuts, biscuits and yes, even cheese!

A mousetrap should work and it is possible to get humane traps.  I've heard that mice like peanut butter as well as cheese and other snacks.  If you can borrow a cat, just the smell of a cat should send the mouse running.
