Question:

I have a nanny interview on Monday! Need some tips

The parents want to interview me to see if I will be a good nanny for their 2 and 3 year old daughters. I love kids and have babysat many times. The only problem is that I've never really had an official nanny position before. Cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, and childcare. How do I prove to them during this short interview that I am capable of doing these tasks? What are some great ways to impress the parents? What are some ways to interact with their children to reassure the parents that I'm the right one for the job?

By the way, I'm 21 years old, don't smoke, drink, or do drugs. I have a perfect driving record.

  1. That's a tough one. If  I were the parent and found out you were brand spankin' new at this, I would have some doubt about your experience and education.

Do you have any experience at all?  Do you live by yourself and do all these things for yourself? Can you prove that you have a "perfect" driving record?  My sitter gave me proof.  Have you taken CPR and First Aid class and have proof? I sure hope you do.  If you didn't have at least a CPR or first aid class behind you, I would not hire you.

Dress appropriately and be polite - just like a regular interview. Don't wear shorts and a tshirt.   Don't cut them off when they are talking.  Shake their hands of course and when they introduce you to the kids, kneel down to their level and say "hello nice to meet you.  What a pretty outfit you have on, or what pretty blond hair you have" something to flatter the kids.

  2. As a parent myself, I would be impressed with someone who arrived at the interview with typed references of previous work experiences, a list of recipes you would want to try with the kids; also if you had a box of crayons and coloring sheets (or something age appropriate) in your purse just in the case the kids start to get rowdy during the interview then ask them if the want to color while you are talking to their mom. Also bring a COPY of DL and SS card and any certifications you have (i.e. CPR, First Aid, etc...) Hope this helps! Just be yourself and always smile!

  3. Obviously they are interested in you already. The advice I give you is to stay calm and be honest. As a parent, I would like to know the "real" person who will be caring for my children. The tasks are basic and can be learned real easily. Let them know what you are capable of already, as well as what you are looking forward to learning from them. JUST BE YOURSELF! :o)

  4. okie first calm down lol and just be your self and just answer any qyestions they ask and be your self lol just let them kno you can do it and wear something cute that shows your age tho and dont wear alot of make up
