I have a new sony hc9e and final cut express but final cut doesn't recognise the camera- any ideas?

It's not the cable as I can import from the camera to imovie. I'm at a loss!!!

You need to install the "Apple Intermediate Codec". It is on the system discs. You need to do a "custom install" of the operating system from the system discs and select only the "Apple Intermediate Codec". Then, in your FinalCut preferences, you will see some new selections... HDV and a few others.

Of course, the other thing you can do is import using iMovieHD 6 and that file should be readable by FinalCut.
