I believe there was actually a version of the game much earlier than 1952 - mayber as early as 1915.  The site boardgamegeek.com often has information on old board games.  Another option is to look on ebay and see if there is one for sale there, and you may be able to get more information about it that way or from the seller.  The game is based on the story of Pollyanna - I don't remember much about the story other than a man named Mr. Pendergast, but I do remember that as a child I loved the story.
