Question:

I have a pain in the arch of my foot, what could it be?

I just ran a marathon 2 weeks ago and it feels like it's ripping when I run on it. I have to walk very oddly when it hurts so I don't put pressure on it....

Any suggestion on how to heal it or even what it possibly is would be greatly appreciated.

  1. stress fracture...I am sorry that I cannot spell this bone correctly but its a little round bone in the center of your foot called the(sessamoid???) Running and aerobics cause it to fracture easily. I fractured mine.

I would stay off of it for a few days and get an extra cushioning for the sole of your shoe and wear a good support shoe.

  2. I'm going to side on the plantar fasciitis(sp?).  A broken bone or stress fracture would be a VERY sharp pain every time the foot bore weight.  The tearing sensation you conveyed makes me think it's connective tissue and not bone..

The fact you ran a marathon two weeks ago maybe has something to do with it.  many inexperienced marathoners don't realize what stress the race put on their lower bodies.  They rest a few days until the soreness is gone and then go back to regular training.  THAT'S when the damage is done.

I would see a running-oriented foot doctor(podiatrist) if you don't already have one you use.  You didn't mention your age, but that's a factor as well.  I predict that he/she will tell you that after the Xray/MRI, you'e going to need some serious time off you feet.

If you plan to run for years to come, I would also seriously consider getting fitted for orthotics.  85% of the population has some sort of functrional foot problem that marathons will aggrivate in SPADES!!  Having your foot hit the ground at the proper angle is critical to lower body health when running.  Even a 1/4-3/8" difference in leg length can cause problems.  Some health insurance companies cover orthotics and some don't.  Definity Health does(my provider).  Blue Cross....not so much.  First though, let's get the arch fixed.

No one is ready to run another marathon until they've forgotten how bad the last one felt!!

  3. its plantar facsitis (sp) I have it in both feet.  take the others advice about the orthotics, it makes a world of difference.  somethings you can try now...gently roll a golf ball along the arch of your foot (do this while sitting). invest in a straussberg (sp) sock. It keeps the foot at a 90 degree angle with your leg while you sleep.  massage the arch with your hands after running.  try not to stretch it vigorously bc that will tear any of the healing that has started.  REST, its the most difficult part of any training regimen. Ice the whole foot, do this while or before you are going to be off your feet resting.  try not to run or walk immediately after icing.

  4. It's plantar fasciitis - do a google to find out more about it.

You have overstretched the muscles and it can take quite a while to heal, sometimes months.
