  1. I am surprised that you cannot put the mini dvd into your laptop  - - in every laptop dvd drive I have come across the dvd locks onto the central spindle - it is designed to do that so that you can leave a dvd in place while you carry the laptop around.  Have you tried seeing if the mini dvd locks onto your central spindle - just the same as a full size dvd.

    If it does locate - and I suspect that it will - You will have to 'finalise' the mini DVD  - your camera manual will tell you how to do that so that your PC can 'read' it - but you should note that once a DVD is finalised you cannot record any more video on it.

    then try it this way

    Use a programme called Ulead VideoStudio - you take the mini-disc out of your camcorder and put it into the DVD tray of your laptop  making sure it snaps onto the central spindle and close the tray.

    Inside VideoStudio you select "Insert DVD" and point the programme at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the timeline of VideoStudio so that you can edit it - add lots of different videos together - add titles/music/narration - make a file that you can e-mail or upload to 'Youtube' etc. and finally burn to a full size DVD to play in a standard player.

  2. I have a dvd camcorder too...

    this has been the most frustrating thing ever. No video editing softwares I have tried have been able to edit the file type that is delivered from the mini dvd. If I had known this before I spent $800 on the camera, I would have spent $500 on a mini DV tape video camera.

    Seems silly, doesnt it?

  3. If your laptop has that DvD drive where a platform pops out to which the dvd is inserted, that's it. The video files are in *.vob inside disk folder /Video_TS.  only selected video editing app support .vob files- have to be converted to supported format.

    View video (*.vob) files

    - Insert finalized DvD disk to pc

    - open windows explorer / click start -> myComputer

    - click on drive X: / DvD / Video_TS/ *.vob files

    Convert *.vob files to .avi or .wmv

    - download converter (Win Media Encoder or Super or Prism)

    - open / browse =>drive X: / DvD / *.vob file for conversion

    - convert: to .avi (best quality-have hdd capacity?) or .wmv  or (mpeg2?)

    Check: play .avi or .wmv files to be edited
