  1. If your camcorder uses miniDVD optical discs, NEVER put a miniDVD in a slot loading optical drive. If your computer has a drawer loading DVD drive, you can rip the video with HandBrake http://handbrake.fr/

If you do not have a drawer loading optical drive, you can get an external DVD drive (I like LaCie), or, using the AV cable that came with the camcorder, you will need to use an "analog/digital bridge" from http://canopus.com/products/videoconvers... if your computer has a firewire port or http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us... if your computer only has USB.

Warning: DVD based camcorders compress their video a LOT onto the miniDVD - transferring the video to computer results in poor quality video.

  2. You will have to 'finalise' the mini DVD first - your camera manual will tell you how to do that - but you should note that once a DVD is finalised you cannot record any more video on it.

    then try it this way

Use a programme called Ulead VideoStudio - you take the mini-disc out of your camcorder and put it into the DVD tray of your PC making sure it sits centrally in the little depression made for it.

Inside VideoStudio you select "Insert DVD" and point the programme at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the timeline of VideoStudio so that you can edit it - add lots of different videos together - add titles/music/narration - make a file that you can e-mail or upload to 'Youtube' etc. and finally burn to a full size DVD to play in a standard player.

Full details and a one month free trial of VideoStudio from Ulead.com

  3. If you have a mini dvd camcorder….

You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer 's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (i downloaded handbrake file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.

  4. If you just want to transfer the DVD files without converting them to a different format, try DVDDecrypter.
