  1. Yeah there are plenty of media players out there. Try WinAmp or Realplayer, those are the ones I use when I am forced to use $Windows at all. If you like free software you should try Linux instead of Windows.

I don't know if theres a way to get rid of WMP directly, it might be built in to the OS.

  2. You do not want wmp11 anyway, because it is the worse player there is

Install Gomplayer, it is free and replaced all the other players, like divx, quicktime, realplayer, windows media player. etc

Gomplayer is free and plays anything.

go to preferences   --  others  ---   select all

    file types  --  codec

Uninstall windows media player. I know you can\t uninstall it, but you roll it back to wmp 10 or 9

  3. Just get vlc - www.videolan.org/vlc/

    and realalternative - www.codecguide.com/download_real.htm

Those 2 will play anything and everything you throw at them.

PS. The real alternative is actually windows media player classic, the first one they ever made, but the best one xD

  4. a) get a legal version of XP

    b) try using the VideoLan Client  (videolan.org).

This free client designed for media streaming is small and powerful with codecs for most video/audio formats
