I have a plant with a purple bloom and almost like little sticky things on the limbs. Any help appreciated!?

I bought these from a lady and I could swear she told me they were a spider plant, but when I look up a spider plant, it looks nothing like my plant.

Spider plant is the old fashioned name for this plant.  I have many of these in my garden, I personally love them but know others that think they are a nuisance since they do reseed themselves and muliply quickly.  The "new" name for these are cleome.
