  1. Praying mantises eat insects and other invertebrates such as other mantises, beetles, butterflies, spiders, crickets, grasshoppers, and even spiders. The praying mantises also eat vertebrates such as small tree frogs, lizards, mice and hummingbirds. Your best bet is to just put it back where ever you found it,and leave it be. If it's a baby, maybe the mother will return to it,but it's not a  good idea to keep em' as a pet.

  2. Praying Mantises make very interesting pets.  They are fun to watch and are very inquisitive animals.

Keep it in a terrarium with a screen lid.  Put soil on the floor and a few branches and leaves for it to climb on.  The temperature in the cage should be kept at about 80 degrees F.  Water should be supplied as "dew" drops on the leaves.  For this, use a empty, and extremely cleaned out, Windex spray bottle.  Put bottled water, "unchlorinated", into it and spray this on the leaves.    If you do not clean out the old Windex solution from the bottle, or use chlorinated water, you WILL kill the Mantis.

If it IS a baby Mantis, buy "pin-head" crickets from the pet store and feed it approximately 2 to 5 crickets per day.  As the Mantis grows larger, you can graduate to larger and larger crickets.  You can also gather "living" insects from your garden if you want.  The best are things like flys, small moths, etc.  All these insects MUST be put in the cage "alive" so the Praying Mantis can see them and grab them.  You can try offering a living bug to the Mantis in a pair of tweezers, but you'll probably not succeed because they shy away from tweezers.

If you get tired of the Mantis or can't care for it any longer, turn it back loose in your garden, especially among flowers, and it will help to keep your garden healthy and strong.
