  1. Yuppers...exactly the same thing. Your pin # authorizes the debit transaction. When you buy something from the store put it on debit. When you buy something on line put it on credit...that's the functionality. Even though they are still being automatically debited from your account...online wants credit functionality just so the transaction will go through.

  2. You can select credit or debit.  If you select credit, you will not be asked to enter your PIN.  Instead, you will be asked to sign the receipt.

And, yes, it is the same PIN as for your ATM transactions.

At some terminals, it will automatically read your card and determine if it is a debit, and not a credit, card.  In that case, it will override the credit option, and it will ask you to enter your PIN.

When you purchase online, they don't ask the question "debit or credit?" because they only have one way to process it.

It really doesn't matter which one you select, although some security experts recommend that you use the credit option because it is more secure than entering your PIN.

If you want cash back, however, you have to select the debit option.

Finally, for small purchase amounts, typically less than $25, you can select debit and you might not be asked to enter you PIN.
