or any tips. I want to homeschool for other reasons but I'm not exactly sure how to go about about the challenges of teaching my very distracted child to read & such, especially during the Kindergarten years. Any info or anything would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  1. If you live in PA, there are 11 cyber schools where students can take classes online. Here's a group for more info:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PACyberSch...

(It'll be cut off when this posts, group name is PACyberSchooling)

These schools are a great option for kids with IEP's.

Also, search group.yahoo.com for "home school" and "cyber school" for more info.

My son's in a PA cyber (www.palcs.org) and we're very happy with the school.

  2. add is not a real disease, its just something ppl made up so they could give their children pills to pretty much turn them into something they are not. if add was a real disorder, then why did no one diagnose it 200 years ago, or maybe 100 years ago? your chld may be easily distrcted, but what toddler isnt?

  3. Remember a kid this age doesn't need a lot of formal work. 10 mins of reading and another 10 of maths is plenty. You can do all sorts of other subjects as part of your every day life. You don't have to follow the school's routine if you are home. If he's not ready to learn to read yet, don't teach him. Trying to hammer something he's not ready for into his head is frustrating and doomed to fail. It will also teach him that it's too hard and he's too dumb to learn it.

Read books, go on nature walks, cook, garden, play with blocks, etc. The academics can wait until he's ready. The reason you aren't sending him to school is because it won't suit him. School won't suit him any better if he does the same things at home. Spend some time searching on google and don't fall for any of your well meaning friends and relatives telling you he has to go to school. There's plenty of homeschoolers of ADD kids who know better. (I'm on The Well Trained Mind forum and there's many parents on there with ADD kids.)

  4. You might want to look at http://www.Sonlight.com curriculum. They have an amazing online support forum for anyone using their curriculum.

And then I would join some online forums. Most have a special learning needs category where you can get specific tips form other moms

  5. Most of kindergarten learning requirements can be learned while going about your everyday life.  Read books together, even if just for a few minutes.  Watch Sesame Street.  Count and sort things while putting them away (all the red cars here, all the blue cars there, how many green cars are there?), do sorting and matching and talking about size and color while doing laundry, and about fractions (halves, thirds, quarters) while folding the towels or cutting an apple or sandwich for snack.  Use the playdoh or the fingerpaints (shaving cream or chocolate pudding on a slick countertop works wonderfully well!) to make letters and numbers.  Every now and then introduce a worksheet (from a Pre-K or K huge workbook from WalMart, or printed off the internet) that covers something you've already discussed.  Color, cut, and paste projects are great (with kindergarten rounded scissors).  Learn a letter a week and talk about the sound it makes not just the name of it.  Take a nature walk in the neighborhood and talk about what you see.  Grow some seeds in a plastic cup.  Read, Read, Read, go to the library.  If he really is ADD (and he may not be!), don't expect anything to hold his attention for really long periods, but make the most of anything he's interested in.  Use games to discuss concepts.  Meet him "where he is".

Look up the World Book encyclopedia "Typical Course of Study" and see what kindergarteners usually learn.  Or check at www.homeschooling.about.com  where this is listed, with links to internet resources.
