  1. You may have already tried this, but try performing an iPod restoration via both iTunes and the physical iPod. In order to restore the iPod hardware, be sure the iPod is on and toggle the "Hold" button to the off position, then press and hold the center and menu buttons for a minimum of 8 seconds. The iPod should reboot revealing a black screen with the Apple™ logo in the center.

To restore the iPod by means of iTunes, first connect the iPod to your iTunes library and be sure it has a secure connection. Under your iPod's home page choose "Restore iPod" option. A dialog box will appear warning you that your iPod will be restored to factory conditions, and will require reformatting. This will erase all data stored on the iPod, including movies, music, notes, photos, and calendar items. After your iPod has been restored, it will be rebooted and you will be able to re-synchronize all your data.

These methods are intended to be applied to both iPods, if necessary. If the problem persists, arrange a meeting with an Apple representative at the Genius Bar; from there they can help solve/replace your iPod.

  2. for the 8 gb, it probably has a corrupt file on it (maybe from limewire? I had that problem with my 80GB classic). When you hook it up to the computer, hold the center button and either the up, left, or down on the wheel to put it into disc mode (I can't remember, but I'm sure it's not the left). When you do that, it should be recognized by itunes. Delete the corrupt file and click on restore in the iPod's menu.

As for the 30 GB, I have no experience with it. Sorry. Just try to make sure its software is up to date.

  3. for both ipods hold down both the menu and center buttons till you get the apple screen. That should help, if not, go to the troubleshooting section of apple.com.
