  1. try cleaning the laser, it may just be busted, but ino ive read that the laser can get caked over with dust and stop working.  Google "cleaning out ps2" or something, and you should be able to find a tutorial for cleaning it out. Make sure you know what your doing cause you can mess up the ps2 even more while cleaning it, just be careful.

I'd try this first, before anything else just because it wont cost you anything.  and i also heard it can make your system run faster/better.

  2. It's probably not a bad problem, if the laser was totally shot you wouldn't be getting the "give me a ps2 format disc" message, you'd be getting the infamous, dreaded "disc read error" message. Obviously it is still able to read, but the part that validates the originality of the disc is not working.

First of all check the bottom of the discs you've been trying. If they are blue, they are cd's, but if they are silver, as most ps2 games are, they're dvd's. There are two different lasers in the laser assembly, and often the dvd laser will burn out first. If it's not working for either cd's or dvd's, chances are again that the lasers are fine.

Here is a link to a site that will tell you how to disassemble your ps2 and clean the lens, the first thing you should try.

If that doesn't work, try adjusting the lens height, which the link explains.

There is other help there as well.

  3. clean the laser lens  ..it might fix it   use a Q-tip but be gental when cleaning it , if that dont work its broken..

  4. Dude this happened to my cousin and brother.  My cousins would delicately take apart his PS2 and clean it using rubbing alcohol, q-tips, and cotton balls, and that always got it working again for a few months before it would eventually do the same thing.  Then he would take it apart, clean it again and it was back to normal.  We used to make fun of him, until my brother's PS2 did the same thing and my cousin took it apart and cleaned it and it worked great ever since (over a year ago now)  Just be careful taking it apart if you go that route, or you can see if a place like GameStop will clean it for you.

  5. The PS2's laser is known for degrading over time. It also becomes misaligned over the time which also causes that problem, the misalignment can be repaired if you find a guide to do so though. I think you more or less just move a positioning gear for the laser if that's the problem, you may want to look into that.

  6. Buy a new laser for it,I was experiencing the exact same problem with my PS2,and trust me,it's the laser or the DVD drive

  7. It can be many things, but for the most part, it sounds like something is wrong with the laser.

  8. Same happened with my mates, he got a PS3. The reading eye is bust on yours.

  9. Sounds like you may have some dust in the system and just need to clean the laser.  See if any dust or debris is  blocking the laser first as well as make sure that your PS2 discs are clean.  You should send it to get checked out if that doesn't work, but if you want to try it on your own and are way beyond your warranty (i.e., have nothing to lose).  See the link below.
