I have a problem with my rice or rice cooker.?

I never had this problem before, but notice lately that after a day or half a day the rice starts to smell bad. This should not be happening.

My mother thinks that the rice cookers made from china are made to give off more heat making the rice go bad faster.

My mom thinks this because, she asked her friends with rice cookers made from a different country other than china and they don't have that problem.

What do you think?

  1. I've used a rice cooker and/ steamer for over 20 yrs. Left over rice is refrigerated right away and used in soups, or topped with chicken, shrimp - whatever you would normally fix. A microwave is perfect with a bit of water or broth. Nothing smells worse than spoiled rice unless it is spoiled meat. Refrigerate and use within a couple of days.

Clean your cooker with white vinegar. If the problem is not rectified - return it or get a new one. Oster has a wonderful steamer ( 2 tiers) - not expensive. I own that as well.

    Good luck !

  2. Its true.

Try bying a rice cooker other than china, and it shouldn't happen. (:

  3. it might just be that the rice is sitting out all day, in my house we cook rice for a meal, if there is left over we put it in a container in the fridge, when we want rice again we put it in a dish add a little water and microwave it, it tastes just as good as when we first made it...also i've noticed that when the rice sits in the rice cooker for too long its starts to get dried up and crunchy

  4. I have a Japanese one (Zojirushi) and have never had that problem.  I agree with the poster that mentioned not to leave it sitting out all day esp in nasty summer heat.  Is it an old rice cooker, maybe you have burnt out a coil or heating element.

My rice cooker is great but was expensive, you can easily buy a new one at Target/Walmart.  Get a decent mid range one if you use it daily.  If $ is not an issue, go for a Zojirushi.

  5. I'm Japanese and I make rice all the time.

I never used a rice cooker made in China but Japan so I don't know if the rice cooker is causing the problem.

But, seriously it's very odd to hear that your rice starts to smell bad after a day or half a day if the leftover rice is refrigerated in a container, not left out on the kitchen counter. Well, my suggestion to you is to put leftover rice in a freezer.  Well, that's what many Japanese people do. Divide rice into an individual portion with plastic wrap and put it in a ziplock bag for freezer. And when you want to use the frozen rice, just put it in a microwave for a minute or two minutes and it's ready to eat.

By the way, the brand of rice cooker that I always buy is Zojirushi which costs more than $100 dollars. Some Zojirushi rice cookers are made in China but others are made in Japan. So just check where it's from before you buy the brand.
