hi. the halogen bulbs in the kitchen keep going off ,and they will only go back on if you flick the glass, and then only for a short time before they go off again. is this a problem with the bulbs themselves or an electrical fault. they seem to be attached by 2 little grey wires.advice please.

  1. change them.

  2. you have some connection problems somewhere. the house wireing is 120 so when you talk about 2 little grey wires i dont know what you are referring to....must be something in the fixture

  3. There could be a couple of issues with your low voltage fixtures.

#1 : From you tapping the glass it sounds like a poor connection at the bulb base. This could be the result of many bulb changes, or just that the bulbs that you put in are not making a good contact. Spread the pins apart slightly. Be very careful to be as gentle as possible, they are delicate and break easyly

#2: Make sure that the base of the bulbs are what your fixture calls for. G4,G6.35. and that you are replacing them with the right voltage.

#3: Since they are low voltage, are the transformers integral or do you have them connected to a remote transformer?

Could be the transformer that is giving you the problem

Be sure that you do not touch the bulbs with bare fingers. This deposits oil and salt from your skin on the bulb and will create a hot spot on the bulb which will have a tendancy to shorten the life of the bulb. If you do touch them ,wipe them off with windex, alcohol or white vinegar to get the deposit off.

My guess is that is probably socket related. Start there first.

  4. I'd suspect a thermal cut-out operating in their transformer.

Are all connections tight and the bulb loadings suitable for the transformer?

  5. Sounds like an electrical issue.  If moving them makes them come back on, they are not making good contact.  Do the bulbs plug in with 2 wires or are they s***w in bulbs?  If they are the ones with 2 wires that you poke into the holes, make sure they are bent to the right angle.  If they are bulbs that s***w in, you need th have the lights themselves shecked for loose connections.
