Question:

I have a question about Parvo in adult dogs?

I have a 3 year old pit bull who I rescued. I was told by the previous owner that he had survived Parvo as a puppy. He has an extremely sensitive stomach. I have taken to the vet numerous times, had blood work done, x-rays, he's been on medications -- the whole bit. He still has problems. He will vomit profusely, always with mini-blood clots in just liquid. The vet seems to be stumped and so am I. I'm wondering if anyone has a dog that survived parvo and if you recognize any long term effects that you attribute to the Parvo?

  1. I would try getting a 2nd opinion from another vet.  Usually if Parvo is treated the right way, there are no long term effects, except sometimes easy fatigue and loss of stamina.  Vomitting profusely, especially with clots of blood in it, is not a long term effect.  You need to get your dog to another vet.  My pup had Parvo, was treated, and now you would never guess she was ever sick and it's only been 1 month ago.

  2. Honestly, I don't know what to tell you. If you've only been to one vet, try going to another if possible. Or looking up and emailing a parvo specialist on the internet. I know its not much help, but something. So sorry about your baby.

  3. I'm quite surprised the vet didn't give you this answer:

It is not at all surprising to see a parvo puppy with these lasting effects.  Parvo essentially attacks the stomach lining, viciously.  Your dog will likely always have a sensitive stomach as a result of this.

If it were me....I would try a good raw diet and see if it helped.  (it would not surprise me one bit if it did)  But that's entirely up to you.

This is a prey model raw feeding group I like to check out once in a while.

You are welcome to e-mail me if you like I will be happy to give you some pointers.

(hope you see this...I didn't see your response right away)

  4. my puppy just got parvo this week, but vet says he will survive, she told me the stomach will always be sensitive but they can never get parvo again..kinda like chicken pox in adults
