Why isn't her husband called the King of England if she is the Queen? I thought that when the King got married his wife was the Queen, so why is her husband just called Prince Phillip? I want to know how the monarchy works.

  1. I'm confused too..

I was wondering myself. I asked a question one time that asked why dont Queens have more power and they said the King is the DAWG.. so if the Queen was there first.. then that means she is the top DAWG and he is arm candy...

    its Confusing!!! LOL

I guess we need to study these answers !!!

  2. Queen Elizabeth was the HEIR to he father,George VI.He had only daughters,Elizabeth and Margaret.Philip,a third cousin to his wife and a royal prince by birth was not the heir to the throne. He is simply a husband. In England, there is no such title of King Consort for husband of a reigning Queen. No one can bear a title higher than the reigning monarch's so no one can have a title higher than Queen;king is considered a higher title than queen. So Philip is Prince Consort. It would take an act of Parliament to make him a king;Elizabeth has no wish to share her powers and takes her royal duties quite seriously;she is Queen until she dies;then her heir, Charles will become King.

His Royal Highness Prince Philip,Duke of Edinburgh is of the Royal House of

    Schlessweig-Holstein-

Sonderburgh-Glucksburg.He became a naturalised British citizen before maryying the Queen, adopting the family's English name of Mountbatten.

He is Danish-German;his family assumed the throne of Greece because no other Royal House of Europe wanted the difficult job--we can see why now, since the monarchy was kicked out!

  3. In ranking a King has more power than the Queen, since Queen Elizabeth II was the daughter of  King George VI she would naturally have the highest title, so Philip would just be Prince or Prince consort. Another example of that would be Queen Victoria whose husband was Albert Prince consort. Hope this helps.

  4. Prince Phillip did not become King of England, even though they did fight about wheter or not he should in the 1950's, because parliment did not want his uncle to have a lot of power in the country and if they made him King Consort then they would have had to change the House of Windsor to the House of Mountbattan because the name of the house is the name of the king no matter what. Also parliment knew how Queen Victoria had names her husband Prince consort and thought that that would be the best thing to do and a lot of parliment members at the time did not like Prince Phillip's family.

  5. When a Queen marries, normally, her husband would titled as "Prince". However, the title of "King consort" does exist, and is a title given in some monarchies to the husband of a queen regnant. Nowadays, it is a symbolic title only, the sole constitutional function of the holder being similar to a queen consort, namely to produce an heir to the throne. Spain, Portugal, England and Scotland have all had kings consort; however, since the rank of king normally outranks that of queen, in most monarchies the queen's husband is given the title of prince or prince consort instead.

When a King marries a woman, she will receive the courtesy title of "Queen Consort." According to the English common law, when a woman marries, she takes the surname and title of her husbands. Therefore, when a commoner marries a Prince or Duke etc, she legally becomes his Princess, Duchess etc. When a royal princess marries a commoner man, he is not entitled to any of her titles, unless the monarch bestowed upon him a peerage title, usually an Earldom.

  6. Most Queens of England are Queen Consorts and therefore are married to kings. However, under English law (now British law) there is no title of King Consort. Therefore, untitled husbands of Queens Regnant are Princes (unless they have a higher title already - Mary I's husband was King  Philip II of Spain).
