  1. Thyroid problems are very common & yes your thyroid can affect just about everything as far as how your body functions properly. I was diagnosed hyperthyroid(overactive) when I was 19(eleven years ago.) I had started losing an unhealthy amount of weight, high metabolism, sweating more, loose bowels, & the dead giveaway to my problem was having goiter. I took tapazole/ methimazole for a couple years & my thyroid wasn't correcting itself so they recommended I go through the radioactive iodine treatment to shut down the organ, having it removed was another option. Once yo do either of these, you will become hypothyroid & have an underactive or not have a thyroid for the rest of your life. It's not a bad thing though. Hypothyroid is alot easier to treat & regulate than an overactive one. Also having an overactive thyroid is draining on your body because it works everything harder. When I was first diagnosed they even had put me on pills that helped to slow my heartbeat down(atenelol) I went threough the radioactive iodine treatment. Now I am Hypothyroid & will take Synthroid for the rest of my life, but ever since my symptoms of thyroid disfunction ever since have been much more tolerable & now that I'm regulated nonexistant.

TTC- you can conceive hyperthyroid, but does make for a more difficult pregnancy as far as them trying to treat your hyperthyroid with the meds they use & worrying about your potential to experience a "thyroid storm." Hypothyroid is so much easier to regulate as Synthroid is a replacement hormone for what your thyroid would be trying to make whereas the tapazole is trying to use a therapy to synthesize the excess thyroid hormone your body is producing. After you have your thyroid removed or whatever you would want to be regulated before you conceive, but the beauty is that then your body would be functioning more normally making it easier to conceive. I have to say I don't regret having my thyroid shut down, I feel better & am happy to say I am 21 weeks pregnant with my first child & everything seems to be going great. I was always told when I became Hypo that having a baby shouldn't be a problem, only if I should ever conceive they would more than likely raise my dosage of Synthroid to support the baby's needs. Now that I am pregnant & had it checked, everything came back normal so it didn't even need to be increased, so my body is just working with it. Synthroid is not harmful to my pregnancy & my body needs it all the same. I didn't have a hard time conceiving really, we waited until we were ready & it was within the time frame any average healthy couple trying to conceive might expect.

Sorry so long, just wanted to be thorough. Did you discuss with your Dr. about wanting to conceive? I do think taking care of your thyroid issues & following his advice is the best way to ensure you conceive & have the healthiest possible pregnancy. You could always get a second opinion as well. Anyways, Best wishes & baby dust to you :)
