  1. Yes you can. I adopted my step son when he was 19. It was easier because he was over 18. I didn't have to deal with getting permission from his biological dad. Contact an attorney for the procedure for your particular state.

  2. Yes you can adopt someone over the age of 18.  It just no longer is necessary for the adoptee's parents to surrender their rights.  Once a person becomes of majority (18) they can decide that for themselves.  My family has had lots of adoptions over the generations.  My Uncle was adopted when he was 23.  He was raised as a foster child by my grandparents from the age of 9. His biological mother would not relinquish her rights so when he was 21 he started to look into the process and it was done by the time he was 23.

My brother is now adopting his 31 year old step-son in NJ.  I'm going to adopt my ward (a legal relationship where I care for someone under 18).  She just turned 18 so she will probably do it in the next year or so.

In other words, you should have no problem with adoption involving an adult child.

  3. Yes. It involves filing some paperwork, and paying some document fees

I know this because there is a trend in community of those separated by adoption to be adopted as an adult by one's natural parent.  This has the effect of legally undoing the adoption (that was never done with the infant/chid's consent and possibly under duress of the the parent.)  It establishes a legal relationship with genetic family members.

  4. Yup, basically, you are giving them next of kin rights, a new last name, whatever.  It has been done.

  5. Actually yea, my oldest brother was my parents foster for about 2 years, and he asked them to adopt him the day of his HS graduation (he was in the system for years, and was a friend of mine i met through HS, and thats how he came to be with us), b/c he felt they were his true parents and loved them to death. My parents happily did so, and he was 19 actually when everything was said and done, you never saw a guy so thrilled to change his last name and everything. So yes, it can be done! It is the 18yr old who signs the paperwork and everything, along with the new parents, and it's a little weird process compared to most adoptions, but it is all good!

  6. I think it would be up to the person to be adopted even if they're still staying with their parents

  7. The answer is yes,

My parents adopted my cousin, when she was 18 years old.

They had already adopted her two younger sisters, but due to legal technicality's she could not be adopted.

So when she was 18 they secured an attorney paid the fees and we had a full blown adoption ceremony in the courtroom

  8. No.

  9. You can only adopt children. (Meaning under 18).  You might be able to sponsor them but, but legally they won't have any rights as they would if they were adopted.

  10. no not legally

  11. Nope
