How big can an alligator get?

  2. On average, females grow to 8 feet long and males grow to 12 feet long, but males have the potential to reach 16 feet in length.

  3. Alligators (like all reptiles) continue to grow throughout their lives, once they hit certain sizes, however, growth slows considerably. Females usually top out somewhere in the 7 foot range, an 8 foot female is pretty old, 10 feet is possible, but extremely rare. Males slow down at about 9 and a half feet, 12 feet is (depending on your locale) rare, record in Florida is 13 feet 10 and a half inches... 19 feet has been reported, but don't believe it, McIlhenny (of hot sauce fame) claimed to have killed a 19 footer, but his method of measuring was debatable... and take all "Giant alligator" emails with a grain of salt, it's amazing what camera angles can do to make a gator look bigger than it is.
