Alligators (like all reptiles) continue to grow throughout their lives, once they hit certain sizes, however, growth slows considerably. Females usually top out somewhere in the 7 foot range, an 8 foot female is pretty old, 10 feet is possible, but extremely rare. Males slow down at about 9 and a half feet, 12 feet is (depending on your locale) rare, record in Florida is 13 feet 10 and a half inches... 19 feet has been reported, but don't believe it, McIlhenny (of hot sauce fame) claimed to have killed a 19 footer, but his method of measuring was debatable... and take all "Giant alligator" emails with a grain of salt, it's amazing what camera angles can do to make a gator look bigger than it is.
