I had been getting dizzy on and off since February, but it started getting reaalllyyy bad this past Thursday. I got the blood tests done and yesterday I was diagnosed with anemia, and now I'm on iron pills. I also have to take a multi vitamin every day as well as change my diet around to include more iron/vitamin C. (The normal level is apparently 59-151 and my level was 29.)

My parents are concerned because I havent started to show much improvement yet (I told them I've only taken two pills, I'm sure it doesnt move that quickly..) But is there any one who has had/has anemia that can give me a guideline for how long it takes to get over? (With iron pills and a good diet) My mom is talking about taking me to the hospital, and I don't think it's necessary. My blood pressure/pulse was fine, sooo

  1. I had it the whole time I was pregnant. You are doing all you can do for low Iron.Just have regular check-ups with your Dr

  2. You can't expect miracles overnight about this.  Keep doing what you're doing.  Over time you should start feeling better.  If you're still feeling dizzy at the end of a week's time then contact your doctor.  At this point there is nothing that can be done for you in a hospital that you cannot do for yourself on your own.  Unless anemia is so severe that it becomes life-threatening then hospitalization is not really necessary.  Be guided by the doctor who knows about this.  Your parents are not physicians, though they do have your best interest at heart.

  3. First of all, how anemic were you? A hematocrit a few points below the norm isn't likely to cause your symptoms. Secondly, what is the cause of your anemia? Although iron deficiency is the most common, there are numerous others. And if you are moderately to severely iron deficient, why? Do you have some form of occult blood loss? Very heavy periods? I hope your doctor asked these questions and got answers to his/her satisfaction. If not, ask or get a second opinion.

OK. let's assume you are iron deficient. It will take about 1 - 2 weeks of oral iron to start stimulating your bone marrow to produce new red blood cells. Any improvement will be noted after that, depending on how anemic you were at the onset of treatment. But again, you should get an answer to why you became anemic, not just take meds for abnormal lab results.

  4. Jeezuz, talk with your doctor, these types of issues will not be solved on yahoo!

  5. you may consider herbs medicine which are generally safe aside from your pills to fast-track your improvement.. here are a few of them:

    1. blackstrap molasses (aka. pregnancy tea) - 1 tbsp. per day in a cup of hot water

    2. spirulina, (blue-green algae) - 1 heaping tsp. per day.

    3. alfalfa (medicago sativa), dandelion (taraxacum officinale) root or leaf, burdock (arctium lappa), and yellowdock (rumex crispus) have long been used to fortify and cleanse the blood. for mild cases of anemia, they may help bring levels of hemoglobin into normal range. - 1 tbsp. per cup of water. (single herb, or a combination of these four herbs, may be used).

  6. include some B complex supplements/vitamin B and things will start getting better

check the formation of RBCs, you'll see that folic acid(vitamin B) plays a vital role...

B complex tablets are over the counter  pills that might taste a bit weird, but it you're supposed to swallow them, not chew them...

    talk to your doc...

  7. you just need to change your diet. I had anemia and they gave me pills also but you need to start eating the right foods. I got normal after like 3 weeks
