I know that it is safe to take imodium while breastfeeding but my question is I sometimes get diarea for days and the only way that it goes away is if I take immodium. Immodium works like magic for me. But then sometimes I do not get diarea for weeks. And sometimes I get diarea. I think I have IBS but I am not sure. What do you think?

  1. Go see your doctor It doesn't sound serous but you never know. You want the best for your baby. If it is really a problem for you try Formula milk. My friend had a problem with brest feeding So she started her baby on formula. And now she is a Happy toddler. Hope you find a Answer!

  2. It's possible you have IBS.  The best thing to do is watch your diet and your stress level.  See if certain foods may be causing your IBS.  My husband has it, and stress is the main culprit in his case.

Your best bet in cases of diarrhea is to just make sure you are getting enough fluids.

  3. You would really be better to find the cause of the diarrhea.

  4. What does this have to do with breastfeeding?

Watch your diet... it might be something you're eating.  I know that olive oil, though delicious, messes with my bowels.

  5. Your question was is it safe to take Imodium while you're breastfeeding.  Since everything you take into your body can be passed to your baby through your breast milk, it's right to be concerned.  I'd check the package instructions and, if you're still concerned, as your doctor.

Dehydration doesn't cause diarrhea; more like the other way around...diarrhea can lead to dehydration.  Make sure you get plenty of clear fluids, water and diluted fruit juice is probably best.

Only your doctor can diagnose IBS.  Many common foods can cause diarrhea if you're eating too much, like certain fruits. Otoh, bananas are good for diarrhea, as they're firming and are also a good source of potassium, which your body will loose if it's dehydrated.  Rice is also firming.

Basically, though, *check with your doctor*.  There could be several reasons for your diarrhea, and he/she will also be able to advise you about taking Imodium while you're breastfeeding.

    Good luck.  :-)

  6. While diarrhea is a symptom of IBS, it doesn't mean you have it. People with IBS often will eat a meal and instantly have diarrhea. Like, you have a meal at a restaurant and before you leave you often completely empty your bowels. A lot of foods with preservatives tend to cause this. Things like McDonalds, or chinese food (with all that msg) tend to set people off. Some people with very sensitive intestines can get sick even from just a T of soy sauce (which is all MSG, basically). Even caffeine can effect IBS.

If you notice certain foods start your diarrhea bouts, avoid those foods and see how you do.

  7. You would definitely need to get checked out by your doctor, but diarrhea is a sure sign of dehydration.  Make sure you are drinking lots and lots of water, especially if you're nursing.

Is there anything you're eatting that could be triggering the diarrhea?  Sometimes if you're eatting too much of something that can happen, that's especially true of grapes, oatmeal or blueberries.  Or it could be a sign that your intolerant to that type of food, like a milk intolerance will result in diarrhea.

    Good luck!
