Question:

I have a question about claiming childcare?

I babysat a little girl for a few months last year. I claimed the money on my income tax which was no problem for me. The women I babysat for called me and said she needed my SIN number to claim the daycare expenses. I don't feel comfortable giving my SIN number out. Does anyone know if she truly needs it?? I thought if she had my name and receipts that is enough.

  1. I believe that she would need it so that she can claim the childcare on her taxes. it is her child and she would need the SIN to claim her, that way she can get deductions off of her taxes or she would get money back for her child.

  2. Yes, she does need this in order to properly claim the money as a deduction on her taxes.  It's a required field to be filled in on the tax return.

SIN are to be used only for the purposes of taxation and employment, this is a perfectly legitimate use of the number.
