I have a 29 gallon tank cycled with 2 telescope goldfish both 4 inches. I really really really want an oranda. Will my tank allow one more goldfish. My tank has 450gph. And barebottom. If i do put the oranda in the tank. What will be the max size of all my goldfish in the 29 gallon. HOPEFULLY OVER 6 INCHES.

  1. A good rule of thumb is 2 gallons per inch of goldfish. Your telescopes could live just fine in ten gallon tank provided it was fully cycled and filtered.

I know this from personal experience. A 29 gallon tank is plenty big enough to handle several large exotic goldfish.

Bare bottom isn't necessarily better btw...gravel provides benefits other than looks. Benign bacteria will colonize gravel. Bare bottom is just easier to keep clean.

  2. for the meantime you can add an oranda since your goldfish is indoors it will not grow that fast.  You just watch the water quality and do partial water change often.

  3. actually you should have a 40 gallon for the two fish you have...I would really do a 55-60 gallon to put a third one in...don't you feel your 29 gallon is overcrowded with 2 four inch fish already??...and if you get another one..all your fish will die of stunted growth..am sorry really not the answer you wanna hear but thts how it is...and orandas really really grow big...they easily to 10 inches...

  4. agreed it wont be enough.

this might sound strange but when i started out with fish i bought regulare gold fish and i was stupid enough to put 2 in a 10 gallon tank.   lmao i know pretty stupid.   well i asked one of my friends what to do and i found something compleatly strange out....

first off we have horses and the water gets very dirty and we used to clean out the water tank all the time because of the algea from the horses drinking and leaving bits of grass in the water.

well my friend told me to put the gold fish in the water and just leave them.  it's the best thing ive ever done.   i didnt want to get rid of my gold fish and i didnt want them to die.  theyve been out there for over a year and are HUGE!   they eat the bugs that fly into the water and eat the algea that collect on the sides of the tank.  the horses dont drink them up or nothing and the gold fish make everything clean for the horses to drink.

so idk if that will help you or not.  lol   just thought it was a cool thing that i did and that it might help you or someone else that has that problem that you know.

  5. yeah, you do need 40 gallons just for those 2

  6. Telescope goldfish usually get up to 8 inches. Since they are so large  and so messy they need at least 30 gallons a piece. Also an oranda reaches between 6-7 inches so it also need 30 gallons per fish. So getting another fish is really out of the question. These numbers may be extreme but it is needed so that they can live a happy, comfortable life. But you should be fine with the fish you have as long as you take really good care of them.

    Good Luck!

  7. I dont know how people gather that you have to have so many gallons per fish. its not like in the ocean they tell the other fish to leave. In the tank with that many large fish yu really need to watch how much waste they mke. I would check it often. Im sure they will get large... not to sure how long or large... but im sure they will be large enoug to make you happy.

just make sure to keep the tank clean and the ammonia down. with good filtering they should be ok. Dont take my word... you really should consider getting more professional help.

  8. no.... in all honesty, a 29 gallon is about enough to keep ONe healthy full-grown fancy goldie. to have two full-grown healthy fancy goldies you need a 40gallon tank, for 3 you need a 50gallon tank... sorry thats just the way it is =[
