  1. You mean arthritis?

That happens when you mess up your joints if you hit repeatedly, without proper padding or protection.

  2. boxers tend to everdo it i think.

you cant just walk up to a bag or makiwara on your fist class and punch it full force 500 times without some adverse effects.

i am not sure what sickness you are referring to..maybe something like carpal tunnel.

asian martial artists have been doing this training for thousands of years...yes you can.

the difference is boxers don't give their hands time to heal properly.

in kung fu they have what they call "dit da jow" which are various herbal remedies for bruising, sweeling, soreness..etc.

some are hot, some are cold. some you put on before training, some after training. ...whats more is they do it without wrapping their fists/wrists like boxers and thai fighters do.

there is a video of morio higaonna of okinawan goju ryu karate striking a big rock. rocks do not give like makiwara's, punching bags, focus gloves,  or canvas bags filled with beans or steel shot do. ..but that is something you build up to, not start with.

in martial arts there are SO many more things to work on...it is impractical to just work on your fists/forearms all the time.

in boxing however...all they do the entire time is punch something, or exercise. (they do more, but you get the point) ...they never seem to get a break from smashing their fists into things.

*** you are referring to the disease Muhammed Ali got....i believe its parkinsons disease. which has NOTHING to do with hitting things...fist conditioning or anything else. he got it because he go hit in the head too many times over the years....it is brain damage pure and simple!! ...he was a great great boxer...but he was stupid in letting so many heavy hitters hit him in the head so often.

  3. What kind of sickness are you reffering too? Arthitas or Carpal or Tendanidas?

I say it happends due to over excess and improper form with improper padding or devices.

  4. Every punches towards or against our fist there's a consequences. Every art of fighting there's a cure or preservation in healing. Most of these are not listed or practice in the modern dozo or gym today, as they expect you to get use to the pain until you really numb of it. But not everyone are born the same & perfectly fit for "PAIN".

After your punches training, do a warm down. Ideally try to use ice to cool down the inflammation intervally at least half an hour.

In the olden days Chinese use traditional secret massaging oilment to surpress the swelling of the knuckle. It's much painful than using ice but it works well.

Note: Always started your basic punches with thicker gloves and gradually to a thinner one once your knuckle skin started to become more solid. In the long run of this practise you may not need much of thick gloves. Instead a normal bandage would do just fine.
