So I've decided that I am going to work for NASA, and I would really like to be an astronaut, but because so many other people do, I can't see myself actually getting to. Anyways, how much do you think working for NASA would get me? A lot, or just normal? Just wondering :]

  1. Only a very few people get to be astronauts.  The competition is understandably fierce.

There are, of course, many non-astronaut jobs available at NASA, and they are paid and advanced according to the same standards for civil service workers as the Post Office and park rangers.  You can have a career in space stuff without working for NASA.  Whether NASA or a private company (e.g., Northrup Grumman) suits your career goals is a matter of personal aims.

  2. Depends N.A.S.A. might just hire you as a janitor and you could work your way up to a Sanitation Engineer. Besides i doubt there are many openings with N.A.S.A. so why not try the E.S.A. they would most likely pay you in Euro's.

  3. NASA is a huge organization and people with all kinds of skills work there. Only a tiny proportion are astronauts, and far from all NASA people work directly on the space program.

First you have to decide what general area you would like to work in at NASA. Then you need to get the training and credentials for that area. Only then can you get serious about working for them.

My wife worked as a research chemist at NASA for 30 years before she retired. She liked it.
