I think 8 weeks is when they can get their first booster shot, which is distemper. At least that's what my vet said about my kitten, he's going in in a few weeks to get his booster.

8 weeks old.. A booster shot is then needed 3 to 4 weeks later. After this, your kitty will need annual boosters

and your kitty should get its first rabies vaccination when it is 4 months old. After this, it will need a booster one year later. After that, it will need boosters every 3 years.

8 weeks is the preferred age. 6 weeks is a bit young..as they should still be with their mothers.
