I have a question about language structure!?

If you've read a book you can reread it. But wouldn't this also mean that you would have to "member" somebody in order to remember them?

  1. 'Remember' is a whole word on its own. To re- something is to redo it, so re-remember would be remembering twice. For remembering in the first place, it's just another fun quirk of our language, and it sounds better than re-know.


  2. Interesting question, and you're very close to being totally correct.   Actually, 'remember' comes from Latin - 'memor' meaning mindful.  So to remember is to become mindful again.
