Hi! I have central air, and it doesnt seem to be cooling the house off very well. I have the thermostat set at 67, and it says its 83 degrees in my house. Could anyone please give me advise on what could be wrong? Maybe the filter needs changing? How do I do that? Thanks

  1. A/C units should be checked and serviced every year, 2 at the most.  If you don't know about the filter it likely needs changing.  But that shouldn't make that much difference.  Just put your hand in front of the filter and see if air is flowing in.  Also check the outlets and see if air is flowing out.  Whatever you find you still need service.  Out here it cost about 75$ unless repairs are required.

  2. The filter is located in the return air vent, and yes unless changer regularly the can stop up and cause this problem. Should be changed once monthly. Return air is either in a door to the closet where unit sets, or through a wall not far from the thermostat. If there is no air flow through all other vents (the small ones) look at unit outside and the 2 lines going into the unit (near the rear) if they have frost or ice build up you have an air flow problem, and or low charge of refrigerant. You might try cutting the unit off until all the ice melts ( could take several hours to thaw the coil in the inside unit.) There will be almost no air coming from your vents if frozen.

A dirty filter and or coil can cause as much as a 75% decrease in the units ability to cool!

  3. Here is a list of things you can do before you calling in a service person.

  4. There's several things you need to check before someone can even begin to give you reasons.  Is the air blowing throught the vents?  Is the condensor/fan running outside?
