Ok, my friend has a love bird that she had found from a neighbors house, she did not know where it came from so she kept it...he is very friendly always wanting to be around people...so they bought him a playmate...she is a girl and very different from the boy...she runs to her little cage when we walk around her...its been 5 months and shes still acting like that...scared..never wants to be around people...are all love birds like that or are some just scared like that? 1. Birds from pet stores have been listening to screaming children and barking dogs.  They've been teased by cage tappers who think it's funny to see animal cringe in terror.  They aren't socialized, rarely get proper nutrition and vet care.

Basically, the bird is half insane right from the start.  You have to over come that before you can even begin to make friends.

Even if you didn't get her from a pet store, and even if she had the best upbringing, and was never abused, she's still not tame.

Birds are slow learners.  Don't expect improvement for at least a year.

    Yes, a YEAR!

    Beware:

Lovebirds will bond together and ignore you.  The female may teach the friendly male to be shy and withdrawn.

    What to do?

    Stop trying to handle her.

For at least 5 months, bribe her with food and talk nice to her.  Let her know you're friendly.  (yes, I said MONTHS!)

    Good luck.

  2. all love birds are like that, don't worry ....just chill

  3. it usually depends on how they were raised if they were hand fed or not and even if they were hand fed sometimes if the owner or whoever hand fed them when they were babies spent more time with them theyd be more trusting of humans although some times people hand feed birds but dont spend extra time with them and they become scard all birds have different personalities so you just happened to have a more timid one although sometimes if you work closely with the bird itll warm up to people eventually good luck

  4. I think love birds are supposed to be kept in pairs.
