Once the I-751 is approved then what happens? Are we done with the paper work or what else do we have to go through in order for him to be american like me?

  1. Once the I-751 is approved, then he gets a 10-year green card.

That card has to be renewed every 10 years.

He may -- but is not required to -- apply for US citizenship using form N-400. He can do so as early as 90 days prior to the 3rd anniversary of getting his green card (the date next to "resident since" on the card), provided he's still married to you then.

If he does not wish to apply for US citizenship, then you're done with the paperwork (other than renewing his green card every 10 years).

  2. Once the I-751 is approved, then the "condition" on your husband's permanent residency is "removed."  There is no other paperwork to be done- however, your spouse is not an American like you.... rather, he is still a permanent resident... he will be eligible to file for citizenship after 3 years of residency (3 years from the date of issuance on his green card) if you are still married and living together at that time, OR 5 years after getting residency, if you are no longer together.  Until that time, he is NOT an American, and may NOT register to vote (this is important because it can prevent getting citizenship later!).
