On Saturday, I just got 2 tattoos, one on my lower back, and one behind my left ear. The one behind my ear feels fine, doesn't hurt or itch, but the one on my back feels all scabby and like I have a severe case of rug burn. It hurts to touch it to hard with anything, and I was wondering if this was normal. I can't see the one on my back, which makes it harder to tell. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Its supposed to do that. Tattooes peel and itch the first couple of days. Don't scratch or touch it. Wash it 3-4 times a day and put tattoo goo on it. Once its done peeling, wash it once or twice a day and put non fragrance lotion on it.

  2. I have a couple of tattoos.  The one on my lower back was by far the most painful.  I had the same problem as you. The only thing that gave me a little relief was placing saran wrap with a&d ointment on it and taping it to my tattoo.  My itch calmed down and the healing process sped up.  You should see a difference in about 3 days.  So yes, everything you are experiencing is normal:)

  3. yes its normal, its healing......after i got mine i put antibiotic onitment on it twice a day. just to keep it moist so it won't hurt so bad. get one with a topical pain agent in it, this will also help.

  4. Don't have anything to add, except that saran wrap is NOT a good idea. Here's an article: http://tattoo.about.com/od/tattoosafety/...

  5. eh scabbing can go either way. ideally you dont want your tattoos to scab, but sometimes they end up bleeding too much and do. keep it as moisterized as possible to soften up the scabbing. what i do when this happens to me is apply a&d ointment on it on a regualr basis and when you are wearing something that rubs up on it or sleeping tape saran wrap over it (after applying ointment). i know it sounds weird but the plastic locks that moisture in and really helps alot.

  6. congrats.

first, all tattoos heal differently, so dont trip.

    just keep it moisturized.

i have 2 full sleeves, my neck is done, and im working on completing my legs now. they all healed differently. in fact, my latest was done 2 weeks ago, and still isnt healed, where as ive had tattoos heal in days on other parts of my body.

    good luck

  7. Your Fine it is suppose to scab up that means its healing. also sometimes it does itch. i know when i got mine on my arm it itched to h**l but your fine

  8. Congratulations on your latest ink!

Usually 2-3 days after a tattoo, the tattoo surface starts to become solid and a light scab layer forms. The colors may look a shade darker and may feel rough. At this point, until the scabs fall off on their own.

DO NOT pick, scratch or scrape the tattoo. The tattoo is just under the surface of the skin, so removing a scab that is still anchored in the skin will also pull up skin and ink. The bleeding that occurs from picking does not help the ink stay under the skin either. A tattoo scab is the same as any other scab, where it bleeds and can scar if picked on. Picking a scab can result in light spots on the tattoo, and can cause an increase in healing time. Repeated picking in the same areas most likely will result in scaring and can cause discoloration of the skin.

While a tattoo is scabbed over, continue applying lotion as needed and continue keeping it clean. Scabs will eventually flake off on their own. It looks crusty but that is how your skin heals.

While your tattoo is scabby: It can get infected if it gets dirt or bacteria in it. Perfume, beauty products, glitter, bug spray, chlorine, sunscreen, etc, will all irritate the tattoo. Also be careful if you tend to small children or pets.

Your tattoo can get wet, but keep it from getting soaked (baths and swimming). Also, keep it out of public pools, whirlpools, hot tubs and natural lakes, being that these usually harbor vast amounts of bacteria.

Keep it out of the sun and tanning beds, period. Tattoos will fade. To ensure color brightness, a sunscreen is recommended, but only after it is healed.

And always remember, if there is something that you find questionable, that you are not sure of, go back to your tattooist. They have a lot of experience with healing tattoos.

As the scabs come off, the skin will be itchy, dry, and kind of shinny. This usually happens after a week, but we are all different so healing times will very. Also, the better you take care of it, and the less you s***w around with it, the faster it will heal. Keep using lotion until it again looks and fells like normal skin, which usually takes about a month. At that time, more work can be done in the area, and you can get a touch up if you need one.

Never rebandage your tattoo. It loves to breathe.

I'm sure it will be fine :)

  9. well it is normal for it to start to scab but ..what might have happened as well is that the person who did your tattoo did it too deep which makes it a little more painful for it to heal
