I have a question about my sisters pitbull mix?

He's got two, let's call them, "lumps" near the base of his tail, moreso at the top of each rear leg. They're hard and he's had them for quite some time. I took him to the vet who said they are probably just enlarged glands. Then I went away for the summer and when I came back (he had been put on medication by the vet, my sister deals with that) he seems fine with the lumps but I was told he was having side effects from the pills (increased urination). I just read another question about pitbulls having fatty tumors and (I don't think that's what he has) but someone said their pit had them as well. Have any other pit owners had this with their dog? As I said, he's my sisters so I really don't deal with him usually but I was just curious if anyone else went through this. She's talked to the vet and I don't know if she's giving him medication still or not but he still acts the same, just a bit older.

So, has anyone else's dog had lumps/ enlarged glands? I'm just going to pass on any information to my sister...

  1. I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about, so take me with a grain of salt here, but the only glands I know of near the base of the tail are the anal glands.  When the anal glands are full, the dog will usually worry at them, i.e. scooting on his bum, l*****g, or biting.  This is easily fixed, simply have your vet or groomer express the glands.  (it's super easy, but it's not pretty!)

  2. Well i am dealing with my pit he has a  red lump on his chest and the vet said its a fatty tumor and want it cut off

  3. fatty tumors (lipomas) are usually soft and movable.  It would be strange for there to be one on each side in the location you are describing.  That location does sound like anal glands.  Has the vet expressses them (sometimes the secretions get impacted and they need to be "popped", sometimes you can have infections there as well).  the glands can also act up if the dog has allergies (does he have any skin issues, like itching, redness, face rubbing or paw chewing).

And finally does the vet know for sure that they are the anal glands---should be easy for him to tell.  By any chance were the medications the dog was on previously steroids like prenisone or prenisolone.  Some vets will give these for allergies  (although usually not the ideal treatment unless the situation is not controlled by other means).  Anyways, have your sister ask the vet if she needs anything clearified and if she still is confused it won't hurt to get a second opinion.
