I have a question about my years in service and re-enlisting

I am serving as a medic in the army. But I have my LPN license, Army trained by the way. When I signed my last contract I did not realise that my skill identifier was dropped off, but I had to sign a contract anyway, so Idoubt it would have changed anything if I did notice. But that is not the problem, as I have my identifier back now. The problem is while I was in the resrves my years in service got messed up. I was listed as having 3 yearsin service, coming in to the army at 2003. The time I was activated, while I was in the reserves. But I actually came in 1988 NOV. Right now The problem is partially fixed, so it seems. My ERB states my Date of Inital Military Service as 1992, not 1988. My wife says that it should be good, she has some Admin experience, my re-enlistment NCO says that my DIEMS needs to be 1988. He has submitted alot of paperwork to Personnel and Finance, and told me that it could be several months for all this to ge straightened out. How correct is all of this?

  1. Your DIEMS date should be listed as the date in 1988 that you entered the reserves. Now, when you change from reserves or guard to active, they apply a formula to the time you served in the reserves and this formula will give you how much active TIS you now have. That is why the dates are different.

  2. I didn't completely understand your question. You might think of breaking the paragraphs a little next time because it read in one big blurb. (I am only saying that to help.)

But from what I understand is:

    You have broken service

They didn't list your MOS/Identifier correct in your record

and you have reserve time that is hosed.(administratively)

I was in the National Guard and was activated during that time. I was also in the Navy...they had to do a lot of paper work to get my DD214 correct when I got out.

Do you have any previous DD214 in your personal records. They are very important and can help with straightening your reserve time. I know that they issue you one when you got released from activation. (at least they used to because I have 3-DD214s)

Can you order a copy of your personnel records from HQ or other higher admin command. In the Navy we ordered ours from Bureau of Navy Personnel in Millington...I am sure that there is an Army version of that. Order a personal copy of your orders. There might be something hidden or missing in that stuff. And it is a good thing to have.

Who ever you need to talk to make sure that it is fixed all the way before you get out. Don't let them "mail" it to you...once you get out they forget you like leftovers.

Work with your chain of command get your seniors involved and on your side maybe they can make a few calls on your behalf.

One more thing do not be afraid to call IG if they do not fix it. I had to call once when I got out of the National Guard--right after I joined the Navy. There was something affecting my pay because they NG didn't want to release the papers to me because I was seperated....So I called IG and they sent the coppies and it was finally fixed.

The Navy seemed to get it right when I got out for the last and final time. (I had all my personal papers and experience to back me.)

    Good luck.
