so, would it be possible to make a quilt by sewing together some squares that i cut of different cloths (sewing by hand... i dont own a sewing machine), and then putting some backing or stuffing or whatever in between that and a large, solid piece?

or do i absolutely have to have a sewing machine??

  1. The traditionalists always quilt by hand. You could get a book on quilting from your local public library. It will teach you little time saving tricks and will be helpful. You could also call your local quilters guild and ask if anyone will give you some pointers. Either way, have fun!

Below is a link for you.

  2. Of course you can do it all by hand.  That is how the first ones were made.

There are books for hand quilting, one of the Dummies books is dedicated to quilting and says it includes hand quilting.  Google hand quilting and there are several sites to visit.

I love quilting and did several pieces by hand.

  3. Quilting by hand to fun.  I do it all the time.  I have a site on quilting, http://www.appliquequiltdesigns.com.  Check it out for more information.  Also if you to contact me on my contact page I would be very glad to give you more information.

  4. What you're suggesting is very possible.  You can choose to quilt it by using running stitches see here:

Or you can tie the quilt with little knots see here:

Just be sure you read your batting package to see how far apart you can quilt or tie, if you go further than recommended your batting will wad up in the washing machine.
