I have a question about reading?

i dont read so well english. I'm confused in the vowel IE. in some small word , the letter I is the only one that make a sound. for example pie tie

n for long word the letter E sounds. for example priest. but in other moment the both sound for example ambient why? what is the correct way to read it?
