I sit here and see all these new advances in automobile technology, and I wonder, why don't we have forward looking radar in union with the computer controlled antilock brakes, just wondering.

  1. Actually this is available on a few models. But it is expensive. Experts expect this to become more widely available in a few years as the price comes down.

But initial plans are for it to be used in cruise control situations mainly, to keep your car a fixed distance behind the car in front of you.

It may be used also to warn the driver of an obstacle. However, It will be a long time before the technology is sufficiently advanced such that we (the driver) would allow it to apply the brakes, as that can be too dangerous.

Imagine driving down a street and the radar/computer misinterprets a parked car as an obstacle and jams on the brakes. With cars behind you! You could cause an accident. You would need a lot more intelligence in the computer than we have today to make those kind of decisions without mistake.

  2. Most All safety features start out as expensive options and then become common place - either by mandate or market forces.

    Brake lights

    Turn Signals

    Lap Seat Belts

    Three-point seat belts

    Safety glass

    Head Restraints

    Center brake light

    Air Bags,

    Anti-lock brakes

    Stability control

    Automated Lights

    Backup Camera

And so it will be with FLIR,  fog penetrating head-up displays and collision avoidance systems.

  3. As stated above the biggest concern is MONEY and the cost that it will add to the vehicles.

Also even with the best technology for all cars in place, we still need to educate the driver and that will be the biggest hurdle..........................

  4. it cost more money

car makers won't add any features to a car until buyers demand it.

they had ABS brakes on airplanes in the 1950's.

a few cars have head up displays and forward safety systems but they are costly options.

look at GPS systems they are still selling for $2K when you can buy your own for $300 to $400.

most cars now have cheap inflatable spare tires so they could save $50 and 20lbs.
