I have a question about tornadoes.?

If you are driving down a road and see a tornado or funnel cloud, which way should you go? I know you are supposed to get into a ditch or overpass if you don't have time. But if you do, which way should you drive to get away?

Well what you should do if you on a road is stay away as far as possible. If you can, pull over to the side of the road and look at the tornado. If it stays away from you, stay away from it, but if it gets closer to it, you can always try to drive the opposite way from the tornado. If you can't go anyway in your car, try to find a ditch and lie down flat on the ground until the tornado ends or is a safe distance away.

You actually shouldn't go under an overpass...bc that's just as dangerous because the wind creates a stronger pull in the overpass.  It is hard to say which way to drive because tornado's can turn any direction without giving a clue.

If the tornado is far enough away, especially if it's maybe half a mile or a mile away or more, then i would just speed off down the road away from it. Keep in mind that tornadoes can change directions so if you are driving and you don't seem to be making any ground or if it's getting any closer, then i would pull off if you see a ditch. You should never take shelter under an overpass. Otherwise, just go as fast as you can to get away. Obviously, police won't pull you over for speeding due to a tornado, so just do whatever you can to get out of harms way.

One thing to remember, although sometimes hard to determine...

A tornado can move in any direction regardless of the movement direction of the cloud that it is attached to; however it CANNOT ever leave the cloud it is associated with.

With that being said, if you are at a distance and can see the movement direction of the clouds, then move in a direction that will put the greatest distance between you and the storm.
