Question:

I have a question about validating a debt ?

I disputed a few things that collection agencies were contacting me about. I did the whole letter stating to validate debt and sent the letter certified. That was in March. Never heard anything from any of them until last week. I got a letter stating they got my request and they are researching it. I was under the understanding that they only had 30 days to respond. That was 5 months later and what should I do with the other companies I didnt get any response from.

  1. If the collection agencies failed to respond, send a dispute to the credit bureaus with a copy of your validation request attached, indicating the collector failed to validate.  The item should be removed from your credit file.

Kile is very correct in avoiding those awful form letters.  You get much better results using your own words and avoiding all those ridiculous FCRA or FDCPA quotes and threats to sue.

  2. Check the federal trade commission site.  It will tell you.  You must request to validate the debt in 30 days.  Read the FTC site carefully as it will tell you your rights.

  3. Try again sending the letters but this time put it in your own words and not these ill conceived letters you find all over these "get out of your debt" websites.

If you owe the debts then try negotiating with the creditors for a lessor sum IN WRITING and paying them instead of sluffing it off.  Paid does not help the scores much but it will look better than NOT PAID.
