I am looking to get a video camera or camcorder.

I want something pretty cheap.

I also want it to have good quality, because there is no reason to waste my money on something that gives me crappy quality.

But it doesn't have to have FANTASTIC quality, just good! (:

Does anyone know of a good & cheap brand?

Thank you!

  1. The important question to ask is what you want to do with your video clips? If you're think of serious video making then there are several options, but if you just want to shoot off-the-cuff crazy YouTube style video then there are several low-copst cams that shoot pretty good quality for the money. Check out a good Uk website such as http://www.simplydv.co.uk where they have some good forums where you can get informed responses from peple who seem to know what they're on about!

  2. walmart sony is good

  3. Don't be tempted by samsung they will just break, try jvc sanyo or canon.

  4. In today's world, video camera and camcorder are used interchangeably.  A a Video Camera only interprets light signals into a video signal feed while the Camcorder is a video camera with an attached recording device all in one unit.  Your choice of model depends on your specific filmmaking and video needs.

If you want something that is compact, super easy to use, fits in your pocket, and makes videos easy to share on personal websites, blogs, or video sharing sites like Youtube, then you probably want to look at the Flip or the RCA Small Wonder.  Both are available for around $150.  The Flip includes software to upload video directly to Youtube, and the RCA Small Wonder has an SD card slot for expanding the recording memory.

If you want something with more features such as stabilization, zoom, and HD quality, then you need to move to the larger handheld consumer video cameras.   Since there are hundreds to choose from with a myriad of features, you need to narrow down your most important video needs.  This will help you narrow down your choices to a select group to fit within your budget.  An consumer model will be fine as long as your a comfortable handling it, it does what you need it to do, and it records in a format your editing system will handle.  We recommend cameras that record to miniDV or HDV tapes.  Cameras in this field can cost as low as a couple hundred dollars to just over $1,000 .

If you need advanced or professional features and quality, you will need to spend a couple thousand or more.  Most professional camcorders record to HDV, and some include the ability to record to a tapeless system usually either a hard drive or a memory card.  If you choose a professional camcorder, you will probably need to upgrade your editing software.

The reason we recommend HDV or miniDV camcorders is because your computer already has an editing program that set up to capture video from DV tape.  In Windows, you have Windows Movie Maker, and on a Mac, you have iLife which includes iMovie and iDVD.  iMovie will accept high definition and standard definition video from both minidv and HDV cameras.  WMM will only accept standard definition video, but it can come from both miniDV and HDV systems.

If you want to use an AVCHD system, you will definitely need to upgrade your editing program is you are using Windows.
